Instructions
Based on the example pairs of sentences, you have to choose which one is more fluent.
A fluent sentence is a sentence that sounds natural, and doesn't have any grammatical or stylistic mistakes. Here are a few types of errors you might see:
  • Untranslated words (except for names that are more correct to leave in the original language, including companies, computer games, etc.). For example: He went to the магазин.
  • Inconsistent tenses/forms of words. For example: I am go to the shop.
  • Questionable/strange word choice. For example: Her eyes slowly approached the darkness.
  • Any other flaws, including punctuation and capitalization, typos, and anything affecting your perception of the sentence’s meaning.
You need to choose which sentence is better (contains fewer mistakes), or indicate that they are the same (equal number of mistakes). Choosing "same" is acceptable if both sentences are equally bad or equally good.
Differences between sentences in the tasks are highlighted. Pay attention to what is not highlighted in bold — this will help you better understand the meaning of the highlighted words and sentence as a whole.
If one of the sentences contains more information than the other (for example, clarifications/additions), this shouldn’t affect your assessment. Compare only the fluency and accuracy of the sentences.

Examples

Below are some examples comparisons:
1. So I sit and miss.
2. That's why I sit and miss you.
Solution: At the beginning of sentences, "So" and "That's why" are equally acceptable. However, the ending of the second sentence is better because the verb “miss” in the first sentence is missing a direct object. The answer is the second sentence.
1. A little later, Coco Chanel will meet another person who takes her idea seriously and changes her life in a major way.
2. Soon Coco Chanel will meet another person who treats her idea with interest and completely change the course of her life.
Solution: Even though there are a lot of differences in the sentences, they’re both fluent. The answer is "SAME".
1. Click the button below.
2. Click the button below to confirm your email address.
Solution: The second sentence contains additional information, but they are both fluent. The answer is "SAME".

1. CERN optimises the websites of scientific education systems for students from Asian countries.
2. CERN optimises the websites of systems of scientific education of students from asian countries.
Solution: There are two mistakes in the second sentence. 1) “of students” is an awkward preposition choice. The same information in the first sentence is organized in a more natural and understandable way. 2) The word “Asian” must be capitalized. The answer is the first sentence.
